Tony Stark trades his Audi for mystery Acura in The Avengers
Next summer, when The Avengers opens to packed multiplexes, playboy billionaire Tony Stark will be rolling in a trick new ride. After driving an Audi R8 in the two Iron Man features, Stark apparently switches to a never-before-seen Acura sports car.

There’s a very good reason for this.

Movie sponsorship deals notwithstanding, Stark and his fellow superhero companions starring in The Avengers have been called together by the government agency S.H.I.E.L.D. And S.H.I.E.L.D agents, who first appeared in the recent Thor and Captain America films, all drive Acuras.

It has been reported that Acura spokesman Gary Robinson has said, "As you may know, Acura has been in the Marvel Comics Universe films as the official car of their fictional law enforcement agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. That relationship continues for The Avengers.

The open-top sports car that was photographed yesterday is a one-off, fictional car that was made just for the movie and will not be produced.

That said, as you may also know, our CEO has said publicly that we are studying the development of a new sportscar, but we can't say any more about it at this time."

Mr. Robinson also said that he's unable to tell us any specifics about the use of the car in the film beyond what's suggested in the photos, and that Acura itself won't know the full extent of the car's appearance in The Avengers until the film's release next spring.

First they selected vehicles with the five highest reliability ratings in their segments (small car, family car, luxury SUV, etc.); then they evaluated their ownership costs. Then they chose the vehicles with the best balance between predicted reliability and low ownership costs in their respective segments to come up with their list of the Best Cars for the Buck.

Vehicles that made the top 10 list include the Honda Fit, Honda CR-V, Acura TL and Acura RDX.

Continuing the celebration of its 25th anniversary, Acura today announced the availability of a new version of the popular TSX sports sedan for the 2012 model year. Designed to evoke the fun-to-drive 4-cylinder Acuras of the past, the TSX Special Edition will add even more sportiness to the TSX lineup thanks to numerous exterior and interior upgrades for Acura's entry-level sedan.

"The Acura TSX has long been known for its high-revving 4-cylinder engines and sporty driving nature," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "With the new Special Edition, the TSX becomes even more youthful and sporty in character, furthering its appeal to performance-minded buyers."

The all-new Acura ZDX four-door sports coupe burst on the scene for 2010 and immediately garnered positive accolades from top media thanks to its dramatic styling, excellent performance and the latest in advanced technology. The ZDX features stunning coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility. Staying true to the original design prototype, the ZDX features the forward thinking design elements consisting of a panoramic glass roof, hidden rear door handles and bold fender flares.

Powertrain

Standard on the ZDX is Acura's exclusive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system, which has been performance proven on Germany's famed Nürburgring road course and is specially tuned for real-world driving conditions. Setting new standards for power delivery and handling response, SH-AWD® actively varies the torque distribution between front and rear axles as well as between the left and right rear wheels to maximize available traction under most driving situations. This "torque vectoring" of engine power operates seamlessly and allows up to 70 percent of the overall power to be sent to the rear- of which 100 percent of that power can be channeled to one rear wheel. The result of torque vectoring is the creation of a "yaw moment" that enables the ZDX to better rotate around a corner while minimizing vehicle understeer.

Chassis

The ZDX chassis is tuned to provide an ideal balance of handling precision, road isolation and damping. In front, MacPherson struts team with coil-over springs and forged-aluminum lower control arms for precise handling with generous wheel travel. The use of hydro-compliance suspension bushings and a front subframe that "floats" on rubber mounts helps provide superb road isolation. The ZDX's multi-link rear suspension mounts to a separate steel subframe and employs aluminum uprights for reduced unsprung weight. The rear suspension uses specially-tuned coil springs, dampers and anti-roll bar for optimum ride and handling.

Included with the available Advance Package, the Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) tailors the ZDX's fully independent suspension's Active Damper System and speed-sensitive steering to suit the driver's preference for a more comfortable or a more sporting ride- available at the touch of a switch. With the IDS system, Comfort mode prioritizes road isolation and reduced passenger fatigue, while Sport mode favors more crisp handling response, heightened vehicle body control and maximized traction.

The heart of the ZDX's Active Damper System is its electronically-controlled Magneto-Rheological shock absorbers, which can individually adjust from minimum to maximum damping force in as little as five milliseconds (0.005 sec.). Along with the active dampers, the speed-sensitive hydraulic steering assist is automatically adjusted according to the driver's choice of Comfort or Sport modes: lighter steering effort is generated in the Comfort mode, while firmer effort results when in Sport mode.

Body

The exterior design goal for the ZDX was to merge the emotional appeal of a sports coupe with excellent all-season ability and good ground clearance to allow for moderate off-highway use. The unique design of the wide rear fenders and aerodynamic cabin give the ZDX a decisive and powerful appearance, while the panoramic glass roof provides occupants with a breathtaking view of the world around them.

The unique moonroof design teams with the surrounding glass structure to make for the longest glass roof in the automotive market- stretching from the leading edge of the windshield to the trailing edge of the tailgate glass. In the front section of the glass roof is the moonroof that tilts and slides up and back along the outside of the roof. This opening design helps to preserve maximum interior headroom while also retaining the dramatic and personal "sports coupe" design of the cabin greenhouse. A fixed glass panel over the rear seat area further brightens the cabin. Dual motorized sunshades cover both the front and rear glass panels should the ZDX occupants choose to reduce sunlight entering the interior, while a mesh fabric pop-up air deflector achieves a new standard for wind-noise performance when compared to a traditional blade-type wind deflector.

Cargo

Opening the power-actuated tailgate reveals an impressively detailed rear cargo area that offers a total of 26.3 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. Lined with premium loop-style carpet, the rear cargo area also offers a hidden 2.2 cubic-foot cargo bin located under the floor. Hidden behind removable side panels are additional storage areas in the rear cargo-compartment sidewalls. Like the under-floor access panel, the removable side panels have satin-metal release handles, and can be stored in the under-floor cargo bin to generate a wide load space designed to accommodate up to four golf bags. With the second-row seats folded, the ZDX offers a fully carpeted near-flat load floor and a total of 55.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

Interior

Combining premium materials with a new standard of attention-to-detail and craftsmanship, the ZDX interior takes its place as the ultimate expression of Acura interior design. Following the original "2+Freedom" design concept, the ZDX interior emphasizes the needs of the driver and passenger, while also offering enough rear cargo capacity for a weekend trip or a piece of bulky cargo. For occasional use, the ZDX's second-row seats can comfortably accommodate two full-size adults for long rides, or three passengers for shorter rides.

Within the interior, new manufacturing processes allow top-grade leather to precisely follow complex, flowing shapes on the instrument panel, center console and door panels. LED interior lighting and a striking center instrument panel that blacks out when not in use give the ZDX a clean, technical feel.

The MacPherson strut (front) and multi-link (rear) suspension system is tuned for compliant control, and the suspension is assisted by large-diameter front and rear stabilizer bars for flatter cornering. Standard to the RDX is Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control to further enhance vehicle controllability.

Exterior

RDX exterior styling further emphasizes the crossover SUV's sporty athleticism. Large wheel arches, aggressively styled body sides, steeply raked windscreen and a short rear overhang generate an RDX with a taut and muscular presence. A unique rear hatch allows for a smooth transition of the body to the rear bumper— a transition that delivers a more custom look as well as eases loading and unloading of cargo.

HID front headlights (controlled by a standard Auto on/off function) team with sharp body lines, bold 18-inch 10-spoke aluminum wheels, rectangular exhaust finishers and satin body trim to give the RDX a crisp look.

Interior

Inside every RDX, leather trimmed front seats deliver a luxury feel as well as a high outward visibility "eye point" that provides a confident field of view. The RDX has soothing blue low-level ambient lighting in the ceiling that illuminates the front center console area along with ambient blue footwell lighting. The 3-passenger rear seat has a 60/40 split-folding capability and, when folded flat, significantly expands the load area— increasing the total cargo volume to 60.6 cubic feet.

Multiple storage compartments are positioned throughout the RDX interior, including a lockable dual-level center console (that is large enough to accommodate a laptop) that is conveniently located between the front seats. Within the center console is a movable tray along with a coin holder and a place for holding credit or gate cards.

Acura interior design has always made intuitive functionality a priority, and in the 2012 RDX all important systems and controls are intuitive and easy-to-read. The systems used most frequently - audio and cruise control - have switches positioned on the steering wheel and the HVAC buttons are located close to the driver.

The 2012 RDX has as standard an Acura Premium Sound System with AM/FM tuner, 6-disc in-dash CD player, MP3, WMA, XM® Radio, 7 speakers and a 360 watt amplifier. The audio system also features USB port and AUX jack connections for items such as an iPod®, MP3 music player, or a removable memory stick.

All 2012 RDX feature as standard a rear view camera system. A base RDX has a viewing screen that is integrated into the auto-dimming rearview mirror while a RDX with Technology Package displays the rear view image on the 8-inch color screen used for the navigation system.

Safety and Security

Is Acura planning RSX successor?
At a press conference in early February, Honda CEO Takanobu Ito shocked the world's media when he nonchalantly revealed plans to launch a detuned production version of the V8-powered HSV-010 race car. Of course, he was referring to a road-going variant of the NSX successor project, which was shelved several years ago.

As it turns out, the next NSX (which is expected to be powered by a 400-plus hp V-8) features heavily in the company's renewed plan to pump out as many as three sports cars over the next several years.

Just over nine weeks ago, a killer earthquake and tsunami threatened to cancel this about-face from Honda, and rob us of some of the most exciting news to come out of Japan since the Nissan GT-R surfaced three years ago.

But a reliable source close to Honda tells us that while these plans have been postponed as the company sorts out its parts supply problems, they are not dead in the water. In the last few weeks, we have been hearing that Honda is working on a high performance coupe powered by a 3.5 liter V-6 plug-in hybrid, a concept that Ito himself briefly mentioned.

The rebirth of the Acura RSX, the car you see pictured here in an artist's representation, is also on the near-term agenda. According our sources, the next-gen RSX will inherit a version of the just-launched ninth-generation Civic Si's 201 hp, i-VTEC 2.4 liter gas engine with slick 6-speed manual and helical LSD. Fitted with specially tuned sports suspension, the new RSX will also employ an interior inspired by the current Civic Type R and an exterior in a sharp, wedge shape.

Further down the line, Honda is also said to be developing a "more reasonably priced" C-segment sports coupe. Driven by a strong request from North American Honda dealers, this coupe is being developed with that market in mind and will incorporate Accord hardware.

One other concept that we have covered before and awaits the results of Honda's so-called "R-evaluation executive session" is a successor to the Beat. The original Beat was an open-top two-door, mid-engined 660cc minicar that could rev to 8500 rpm, and the next generation promises to be a new interpretation of that concept with a 1.3 to 1.5 liter gas engine. If built, don't expect the Beat to come to the U.S. We have also heard rumors of a hotter CR-Z getting a 190 hp-plus 2.0 liter gas unit, but that's all we have at the moment, rumors.

The 2011 Acura MDX has a bit more edge and athleticism to its look than most traditional family cars. It stands out among the sea of competitors and has curb appeal.

While practical as a family car — it's a midsize SUV with a third row — it doesn't scream, "I'm driving carpool!" If you hadn't seen me loading my kids in and out of it, you might have mistaken me for just another cool, sporty single chick with a penchant for sporty luxury that cruises around certain Colorado towns.

The MDX got me a lot of male attention in my neighborhood. None of these men told me I looked good, but they certainly told me I had a car that looked good. This response intrigued me since I'd had what I thought was a lovely 2011 Infiniti QX56 recently that received no neighbor notice whatsoever.

I happily shared with my neighbors that the seven-seater doesn't just look good, it also drives like a dream. Especially if your dream is to have a car that not only fits your family but that also handles the road like an athletic sedan. The MDX's V-6 offers smooth acceleration and braking. It has plenty of zip and is lots of fun. Additions like the steering-wheel-mounted shift panels, Sport and Comfort modes and Acura's Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive enhance the MDX driving experience.

No test drive is perfect, and there were a couple of small issues I had with the MDX. Most notably, the center stack resembled an airplane's cockpit; it might as well have been since it wasn't intuitive. Although operational instructions appeared on the navigation screen, the system was quite sensitive and seemed to take a few pushes of any button to get things to work. I had to pull over and refer to the owner's manual several times while one or two of my children screamed in the back because they were hungry/thirsty/tired/insert-whatever-you-like-here. The only other issue worth sharing is space in the third row is tight, even for kids. This isn't necessarily something unique to the MDX as many midsize SUVs with a third row offer only cramped space, but it is something to consider if like me, you have three small children.

The base MDX has a starting MSRP of $42,580. My test car, which was the top-of-the-line 3.7L Advance Package, had the optional rear entertainment system and cost $54,965.

EXTERIOR
As all the male attention to the MDX attests, it's hot, especially for a family car. I felt sexier getting in and out of the MDX than I normally do in my minivan. Last year, the MDX got some styling tweaks, including a refreshed face that resembles the Acura sedans and a couple of slick tailpipes and taillights in the rear.

The doors and liftgate were all manageable, and the step-in height was tantamount to that of a minivan. This meant my children (with the exception of the baby) were able to climb in and out on their own, but it was like spelunking for them since the MDX's interior is smaller than their usual minivan.

The power liftgate can be opened with a button on the key fob and another in the car. In the cargo area, there's a hidden storage compartment in floor, which was an ideal size for a picnic blanket. The cargo area is comparable to others in its class, but the 50/50-split third row allowed me to fold a seat down to haul around a jogging stroller and some groceries while my son sat in his third-row child-safety seat.

The key fob deserves praise since it can roll down the MDX's windows and open the sunroof from afar. You also can store your preferred seat position, side and rearview mirror settings, radio presets and climate predilections in it, so when you start the car, everything is exactly as you like it.

The 2011 MDX is powered by a 3.7-liter V-6 engine that delivers 300 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive MDX gets an EPA-estimated 16/21 mpg city/highway. Even with a considerable amount of city driving, I still managed to average around 20 mpg, which isn't horrible. As you would expect from a luxury brand, premium fuel is the drink of choice for this car.

INTERIOR
The MDX is as athletic and attractive on the inside as it is on the outside. The surfaces and lighting are lovely in a sporty sort of way. On the whole, the 2011 MDX gets my vote.

The seats are comfortable, and the standard third row offers convenience and seating flexibility. The second-row outboard seats emulate the front seats with side bolsters to keep everyone comfortably in place, which was nice when there were adult passengers back there and I was demonstrating the MDX's agility. My test car also had standard heated and available ventilated front seats. The automatic trizone climate control is a perk, and it has the ability to automatically adjust the temperature on one side of the car if it's hotter than the other due to the position of the sun.

The second row easily fit two of my kids' child-safety seats without forcing the front passenger to compromise on legroom.

The MDX has plenty of cupholders and bottleholders, and storage space is decent. There are some nifty storage surprises, too, like a third-row cubby that held snacks perfectly and a bin with a sliding cover that was tucked into the front passenger's area just below the front row's cupholders.

While I liked many things about the MDX, I must register my complaints. There is much to extol about the technological virtues of the MDX, but it's a double-edged sword since the cockpit-like control panel was befuddling most of the time. I appreciate that it takes time to learn how to use these things, but the MDX's control panel and setup could have been more user-friendly. It seemed like the car was so technologically advanced that it wanted to control you rather than you control it.

With all of this technology, I found it curious there was no audible alert coupled with the backup camera and parking sensors. The camera projected a clear image with three different view options (normal, wide-angle and bird's-eye), but it wouldn't say a peep if you were on top of something. It's a personal preference, but I like noise with my backup camera and parking sensors.

Finally, the cramped space in the third row was manageable, but challenging. It was cramped enough that my 4-year-old couldn't dangle his legs from his forward-facing convertible. He either propped them on the second-row head restraint in front of him or tossed them to the side of his car seat. Near the end of my test week, he stopped complaining, but for a family of three with small kids in large child-safety seats, it wouldn't be practical for the long-term. Adults also should avoid the third row; I felt cramped when I gave it a try.

SAFETY
The MDX has received the top score of Good in frontal-offset, side-impact and rear crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In the past, those scores would earn the SUV Top Safety Pick status. For 2011, IIHS added a roof-strength test to its criteria. The MDX hasn't yet undergone the test.

The MDX has two sets of lower Latch anchors in the second row's outboard seats and were easy to use. However, I'd really like it if more carmakers would throw another set of anchors in the third row. While the space in the third row is tight, the second row had enough room to handle my youngest child's rear-facing infant-safety seat. I wasn't able to fit three car seats in the second row, which lead to my son being smushed in the third row.

The MDX has the following standard safety features: all-disc antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive, traction control and six airbags, including side curtains for all three rows.

A blind spot warning system and active cruise control with a collision mitigation braking system are both optional safety features.

Acura is teaming up with Paramount Pictures to provide vehicles that will be featured in the upcoming action-packed movie, Thor. Acura will serve as the official high-tech vehicles of spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.), the secret government organization that recruits Marvel's superheroes as a crime-fighting force.

A 2012 Acura S.H.I.E.L.D. TL was revealed at this year’s MegaCon. The glossy blacked out TL was dressed with S.H.I.E.L.D. logos, flashing lights and even a roof-mounted sound-cannon (a.k.a. The Hulk Buster). Unfortunately, the 2012 S.H.I.E.L.D. TL with the Tactical Package, listed for $227,085, was not available for purchase.

Be on the lookout for upcoming Acura promotions for the movie. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Thor stars Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and Chris Hemsworth, and hits U.S. theaters on May 6.

The 2011 Acura MDX exists in a very crowded market segment populated by some very talented players like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Land Rover LR4, Mercedes GL, Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln MKT, Lexus GX and many more. There's also a contingent of fully loaded 7-passenger SUVs offered by pretty much every other mainstream automaker to deal with as well. So why is the MDX such a perennially popular choice?

To start with, the 2011 Acura MDX just makes a whole lot more sense than most luxury SUVs. Honestly, do you need a special rock crawl setting for your 4-wheel drive system when it spends most of the time in a parking lot at Neiman Marcus?

Honda does good wagons. The Civic station wagon sold in the U.S. in the 1975 through 1991 model years was a neat-looking and practical alternative to the then-very-small Civic sedan. The 1991 through 1997 Accord wagon not only suited the eye but also handled corners better than the sedan; the wagon had room for a better rear suspension.

Now, a wagon joins the updated 2011 TSX line from Honda's Acura premium brand. TSX is the entry-level Acura, based on the car sold in Europe as the Accord. It's unlike the U.S. Accord.

The U.S. Acura TSX sport wagon is the Americanized Euro-market Accord Tourer. Acura figures it'll make out fine selling just 4,000 a year here because it already sells plenty over there.

Refreshed 2012 Acura TL to Debut at Chicago Auto Show - Car and Driver Blog

Acura will show a refreshed version of the TL at the upcoming Chicago auto show, the first major update for the car since the fourth-generation model debuted for the 2009 model year. Details are thin for now, with the company simply describing the TL as “newly refined” for 2012.

As with the 2011 RL, the TL’s five-speed automatic transmission will be replaced by a six-cog unit, which should produce a marginal increase in fuel-economy numbers. We expect the car will wear modified sheetmetal that addresses the controversial grille and angular rear end of the current car, pictured above, and Acura will likely pack still more technology and driver aids into the interior. 2011 Acura RL presents slight changes to an aging package — Autoblog
For the 2011 model year, Acura has freshened up its flagship RL sedan. What exactly does "freshened up" mean when it comes to the RL? It may not look like much more than a cosmetic touch-up, but there are quite a few new tricks going on under the nip-tucked skin.

The 2011 Acura RL continues to utilize the 3.7-liter V6 engine with 300 horsepower that powers all four wheels courtesy of the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. New to the powertrain, however, is a six-speed Sequential Sportshift automatic transmission. It's a smooth-shifting unit that allows for the occasional sporty dash courtesy of the wheel-mounted paddles while also improving fuel economy by two miles per gallon on the highway – EPA ratings come in at 17 mpg city and 24 highway.

An upgraded gearbox is nice and all, but since this is an Acura we are looking more for new technology. The 2011 RL is fitted with Hemholtz resonators in the wheels (a "world's first" for a passenger vehicle). These chambers sit in the center portion of the inside of the wheel and help diminish road noise, which results in a quieter cabin. Coupled with increased floorboard insulation, the 2011 Acura RL behaves like a library out on the road. Unless of course you twist the knob for the ELS audio system.

Up front, the grille of the 2011 Acura RL has been revised to soften the angry-hawk nose while retaining a signature Acura look... opinions are divided on how successful the new schnoz may be. Brand new 18x8-inch 15-spoke aluminum wheels help fill out the wheel wells and get wrapped in Michelin Pilot all-season rubber.

Overall, the changes to the 2011 Acura RL are minimal, minus the upgraded transmission and in-wheel noise reduction technology. We had a chance to very briefly sample the '11 model on the roads north of San Francisco and there's unfortunately not much to get excited about. The rest of the lineup, regardless of how one feels about the styling, presents a sporty driving experience that doesn't eat into the luxury. The RL feels heavier than it should while presenting a driving sensation that feels much more aged compared to its Acura siblings. We understand that its aimed at a different segment of the market, but that doesn't mean it should lose the driving characteristics long-time Acura buyers have come to expect.

What's New for Every 2011 Acura Car, Truck, Crossover and SUV

2011 Acura MDX:
With only minor changes to the exterior color and interior trim, the MDX lacks any significant revisions for 2011.

2011 Acura RDX:
Like the larger MDX, the 2011 RDX gets only minor changes to its exterior colors and interior trim this year.

2011 Acura RL:
A new front fascia, updated grille and new 18-inch wheels are the most obvious changes to the RL for 2011. Inside there are new front and rear headrests, revised seat stitching, a new gauge cluster and updated wood grain. Functional changes to the navigation system include improved telephone dialing and voice recognition. Parking sensors and power-folding side mirrors are also new.

Underneath there's a new six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting. The new gearbox provides better acceleration and improved highway fuel economy. Subframe and transmission mounts have also been revised.

2011 Acura TL:
After a complete redesign for 2010 the TL continues with only minor changes to the exterior color and interior trim in 2011.

2011 Acura TSX:
A midcycle refresh of the TSX includes styling updates, interior tweaks and the introduction of a Sport Wagon style.

Exterior changes include new front and rear fascias, a new front grille, revised taillights and new 17-inch wheels. Interior updates include new trim, seat stitching and rear air-conditioning vents. There's now a 60GB hard-drive-based navigation system with a color screen. A 15GB hard-drive audio system replaces the previous six-disc CD changer. Updates to the TSX's Bluetooth system improve voice recognition. LED interior lights combine with additional underbody sound insulation and an acoustic glass windshield to reduce interior noise.

Retuned transmission shift logic combines with enhanced aerodynamics to increase city and highway fuel economy.

2011 Acura ZDX:
All-new last year, the 2011 ZDX continues with only minor changes to the exterior color palette and interior trim.

In advance of National Teen Driver Safety Week (October 17-23), today the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released the first naturalistic study using in-vehicle cameras to capture teenage drivers and their parents during their supervised driving phase. Nearly half (47 percent) of parents in the study reported that after the year-long learner’s stage, there was still at least one condition in which they did not feel comfortable letting their teen drive. Yet, more than one-third (37 percent) of these families allowed their teen to obtain a license within a month of being eligible, although a few families restricted driving in certain scenarios.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in this country. The first few years of unsupervised driving are the most dangerous – 1,368 U.S. teen drivers age 15-18 died in traffic crashes in 2008. However, teens are clearly a danger to others as well because the total number of deaths resulting from these crashes was 3,431.

The TSX kept a big, goofy grin plastered across my face the whole time I had it, whether ducking through traffic on the way home from the office or running around later in the evening, the surprisingly smooth four-banger eagerly responding to anything I asked so long as I kept the revs piled really high. It's far from a horsepower machine--though with 201 hp pulling 3,400 pounds around, it's not terrible--but in the best tradition of Honda-built engines, it sings at the top end of the tachometer, and the shifter ensures it's easy and a joy to work that tach needle, keeping the car planted in the fat of its power band.

While Acura's TL has only been on sale since the 2009 model year, it appears Acura engineers are prepping an updated model.

The "Power Plenum" grille featured on the TL has been nothing short of controversial, and it appears that is where the bulk of the changes will occur on the updated TL. Given the instrumentation attached to this prototype, some modest powertrain updates may also be in the works.

Watch for the official debut sometime this fall.

Second National Distracted Driving Summit Set for September
The federal government on Tuesday said it will hold a second National Distracted Driving summit on September 21 . The first summit last year triggered a number of state laws that ban texting while driving, and celebrity endorsements — from people like Oprah — for government crackdowns on the problem.

The second summit will "explore accomplishments since our first summit, as well as the many challenges that lie ahead," said a statement from U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "Key topics will include research, technology, policy, public outreach and best practices in enforcement."

Following last year's summit, the Obama administration banned texting while driving by 4 million federal employees while they are driving government-owned vehicles. The government also launched a new www.distraction.gov to draw attention to the problem.

Many parents use a backseat baby mirror to help them keep an eye on their infant while they’re driving. Before my first child was born, I bought one, too. However, my husband’s fire department pals warned us not to use it. In the event of an accident, they said, the mirror could fly off the headrest, become a projectile and hit either the baby or another passenger. Of course, I promptly took the mirror down.

Although I don’t use a backseat baby mirror, many parents do. Some simply need the visual connection with their infant that these mirrors provide, said Bill Flinchbaugh, aka The Car Seat Guy, a certified car-seat technician. It provides them with a sense of security, he said. Chalk that up under the baby mirror’s pro section, and that’s where the pro list ends.

As for the cons, there are plenty, Bill says.

• Like the firefighters told my hubby, it’s relatively easy for most of these mirrors to come loose, particularly in the event of an accident.
• The mirror becomes a visual distraction to the driver, and we all know that a more focused driving style — not less — is safer.
• It makes night driving a challenge because the mirror becomes a source of background glare when it reflects other vehicles’ headlights.

Of course, if none of these reasons have convinced you to put your baby mirror away, make sure the mirror has straps that wrap tightly around the backseat headrest. You also should place it slightly to the side of your child, so it will fly past him instead of right into him should it come loose in an accident.

Top 10 Most Dangerous Drivers by Profession

As if lawyers needed another knock against them, it now turns out they are the most dangerous drivers, according to a study by Insurance.com.

The insurance rating agency ranked the top 10 most dangerous drivers by profession and found attorneys at the top of the list, with 44% claiming a prior accident when comparison shopping for car insurance at Insurance.com.

The least dangerous drivers turn out to be — counterintuitively — athletes (17% claim an accident) and homemakers (24%).

Insurance.com speculates that people with stressful careers and heavy workloads likely spend more time in the car and more time taking part in distracted-driving practices such as talking on cell phones. This would make sense for the No. 2 spot on the list — financial professionals, another popularly bashed position.

Let this also be a lesson to you that every time you plug even the most innocuous information into the Internet, someone is usually trying to use it for some nefarious purpose, like single-handedly creating more lawyer jokes.
